It has been a quarter of a millennium since the birth of the greatest radical innovator in music history: Beethoven exploded classical forms and paved the way for the Romantic era. Although he lived to be 56, his works attest to an eternally rebellious and youthful soul. It is no wonder, then, that Müpa Budapest is inviting young people to enjoy this morning lecture concert.
The title for the concert, A Genius from Bonn refers to the beginning of his career, as though we know Ludwig van Beethoven as the personification of the First Viennese School, we shouldn't forget that he was a newcomer to that city, just like Mozart and Hadyn before him. He was born in Bonn, not an Austrian but an German with Flemish ancestors. During this concert we will hear works from the first of the three major creative periods of the artist's career, with the music performed by young performers who are of a similar age to the young composer at that time. The Franc Liszt Academy of Music Orchestra will be conducted by Gergely Ménesi, who is highly experienced in directing young musicians, while the long-time presenter Balázs Fülei will also perform on the piano.
The narrative and explanatory discourse plays an important role in these matinees. It is always presented in an informal manner and will help even those unfamiliar with classical music to understand Beethoven's musical world. One intriguing aspect of the show is that three of the five works represent the first step in a crucial genre: the first piano sonata, the first piano concert and the first symphony. On this occasion, the young audience will have the chance to learn how the young Beethoven became a composer.
