A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel, offers an image of a not-too-distant and not-too-friendly future. Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, adapted from the book, is actually even darker, more violent and more provocative. Both the book and the film were banned. In fact, the director himself withdrew the film from release when a year after its premiere the events displayed on the big screen occurred in real life. Yet A Clockwork Orange lives on, and the questions of manipulation and free will it confronts have lost none of their relevance.

People are - unfortunately - sometimes capable of hideous, violent acts. They commit sinful deeds. But what would happen if we removed sin from the man, the tendency for aggression? The formula is simple: world - sin = good. Or maybe not... And what about all those well-intentioned, well-educated and sophisticated individuals? Would the worlds they created/inhabited be free from sin, from misery? And how do we deal with the ruling class, who regard individuals from all walks of life as nothing more than raw material for a well-chiselled process of generating power? One of the many strengths of Stanley Kubrick's film is that the near future is also beautifully depicted in terms of the objects, clothing and interiors. And the music. The melodies of Beethoven, Rossini or Elgar have never been heard in such a context. Not to mention the uplifting music of Singing in the Rain, which no one, perhaps, will be able to listen to in quite the same joyous way again after watching this film.
